Lessons in Leadership: A conversation about obstacles and opportunities facing female mayors

Thursday, October 12

10am PT | Noon CT | 1pm ET

Women have made great strides in the world of politics. However, in 2023, there are still many US cities that have never elected a woman to serve as mayor. While every candidate and mayor’s experiences in the process differ, enormous gender-based barriers persist. The 1887 election of Susanna Salter, America’s (and the world’s) first woman-elected mayor who served, continues to shed light on today’s process, media representation, campaigning, resistance, and success of women in local politics.

Join moderator Wendy Doyle of United WE, children’s author Karen M. Greenwald, Mayor Mattie Parker of Fort Worth, former Mayor Melina Carnicelli of Auburn (NY), and former Mayor Diana Smith of Seneca Falls (NY) for a discussion about their election victories, obstacles in office, and how Mayor Salter’s story reflects their own. This webinar is made possible in partnership with The National Women’s History Museum.

The National Women’s History Museum strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. For questions, or to request accommodations such as an ASL interpreter or captioning, please email history@womenshistory.org at least 7 days in advance of the program.

Research Release: Gender Parity and Racial Diversity on Civic Boards & Commissions in Missouri

Join United WE and the University of Missouri–St. Louis as we dive into our findings on women’s participation on civic boards and commissions in Missouri.

Across the nation, women are historically underrepresented on civic boards and commissions. This gender disparity is especially glaring on “power boards” that have enormous impacts on public policy and the allocation of financial resources. We hope you’ll join us as we discuss the results of this research and how we plan to use it to inform policymakers, elected leaders, advocacy groups, and potential members of boards and commissions.
